Letting go
is
Trust
We have to say goodbye to Joletta here on earth. The slow decline due to Huntington’s disease was a difficult road. We trust that she may now rest in the arms of our Lord, relieved from pain and suffering. We find comfort in the certainty that she has her place in heaven, where she will be at home forever. John 14:2 ‘In my Father’s house are many rooms: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.’
Poem by Rutger Kopland:
‘Leaving is something different than slipping out of the house,
softly closing the door behind your livelihood and not returning.
You are still someone who is being waited for.
Going away can be described as a kind of remaining.
Nobody waits, because you are still present.
Nobody has to say goodbye, because you are not leaving.’
Joletta’s ‘Leaving’ is about a feeling into the depths of our heart, a fear that surfaces because Joletta is definitely ‘leaving’ for our Father’s house. What can help us, those who are left behind, somewhat is to comfort each other, be alone for a while, play music/sports or just be together with family, friends, acquaintances, ex-colleagues, colleagues, fellow Doevenaren (inhabitants of our hamlet) with preferably an arm around each other … a togetherness where grief has it’s place, but also the realisation that time will be needed to heal. Finding yourself important enough to take the time to reflect on what will be missed!
We invite you all to attend the farewell service on November 30th 2024 around 13:00 (please allow for parking time). To say goodbye together to Joletta, a woman who lived wholeheartedly, and inspired us to do the same. From home, Joletta will be carried to Valkenvoortweg 6, Doeveren, ‘Arnoud’s Buurtschuur’ where we will all walk past the coffin. The funeral service will also take place in the ‘Buurtschuur’. After the service, Joletta will be escorted out and buried privately by her family. There will still be a short moment afterwards to say goodbye in person at the grave.
No more movements, no more exhaustion; Joletta is now truly at rest knowing how she is loved to her very soul. Jesus says: ‘you will find rest for your souls’ (Matthew 11:29b).
Should you wish to make a donation, we have selected 2 ‘charities’: ‘the Church of Doeveren’ and ‘the Huntington’s Association’
Joletta and her movements
‘Huntington’s disease’ symptoms: chorea (involuntary movement, dancing), cognitive loss, and behavioural disturbances are also known as a medical ‘Trinity’. The movements are uncontrolled: Joletta has muscles that involuntarily move, but do not complete its movement. Unfortunately, the origin of these involuntary movements is even more mysterious than that of the other symptoms. Despite every cell in the body showing the abnormal protein that causes Huntington’s disease, brain cells seem to have a preference for dying off. Indeed, often specific sections of the brain die off faster than as a whole.
Thankfully, we were always able to communicate well with Joletta, and she experienced much joy in her last moments. As a family, we received immense support from ‘De Kloosterhoeve’ in Raamsdonkveer, which was made possible in part by the Huntington Association.

Church of Doeveren
Doeveren: A Lively Congregation in Togetherness and Tolerance. Our intimate church building is the heart of our dear Lord’s family and the village. In an open and relaxed atmosphere, church services are held there every Sunday morning at 10 am. Guest preachers from across the breadth of church minister there. This variety keeps the sermons interesting and lively. One-sidedness is foreign to the congregation.
As a family, we are very grateful for this church, where our friends, fellow villagers, neighbours and dear compassionate members of the congregation have always welcomed us with warm hearts.
